Local sources inform that the Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) has officially “applied for permission to drill for geothermal energy at its Crewe campus.” since the institution wants to generate clean, renewable energy to power its buildings.

The application is for a “single vertical well drilled to a depth of 2km below ground level together with associated infrastructure, which will include above ground wellhead.”

The same sources that “at the full council meeting two months ago, council leader Michael Jones said: ““I’m very confident we can get a geothermal deal done this year where £50m of private sector money will come in.”

If this project comes to life, it would be the first geothermal energy project to go live in the country.

The MMU application can be read and commented here.
